Outline of reorganisation

In April 2019, the Graduate School of Agriculture and the Graduate School of Fisheries reorganised three existing Departments of the Graduate School of Agriculture--Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources; Biochemical Science and Technology; and Environmental Sciences and Technology--and five Departments of the Graduate School of Fisheries--Aquatic Sciences; Fisheries Resource Sciences; Food and Life Sciences; Fisheries Economics; and Aquatic Environment Conservation--into the Graduate School of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries consisting of four Departments: Agriculture, Natural Resources and Forestry; Food Innovation Science; Field Environment Science; and Fisheries Resource Science. The aim is to develop human resources who possess advanced knowledge in both agriculture and fishery sciences. Specifically, they will be capable of utilizing ICT, etc. to make agriculture, livestock, forestry and fisheries industries smarter and more advanced. In addition, they will have the capabilities to cope with food safety, quality assurance and globalisation.

Under the new organisation, the Department of Food Innovation Science provides interdisciplinary education covering both the agriculture and fisheries sciences. The aim is to develop human resources who will develop innovative food products using bioresources available in southern Kyushu and bring advanced life sciences into play in communities. Field Environment Science also combines agriculture and fisheries sciences and provides practical education by taking advantage of its field of activity which covers the land and sea area affected by the Kuroshio Current. The objective is to develop human resources who make the best use of environmental science, produce results quickly once they are in the job and solve the problems of local communities. The two Departments provide the education necessary to identify problems and solve them in ways that overcome the boundaries between specialties in agricultural and fishery sciences.

he other two Departments--Agriculture, Natural Resources and Forestry; and Fisheries Resource Science--provide education and research opportunities within the framework of traditional agriculture and fisheries sciences. However, the objective is to develop new types of human resources who will revolutionize the concept of productivity, cope with the Super Smart Society and revitalize local communities through innovation.
