Message from Dean

Due to the drastic worldwide population increase, global food production increase has become an urgent issue. The pressing issues are different in Japan, where we face many other problems, including revitalization of farming communities, improvement of the food self-sufficiency rate, food safety and security, and coexistence between people and nature. It is required of agriculture to confront these problems while contributing to human life and welfare.

Faculty of Agriculture of Kagoshima University is located in Kagoshima, one of Japan's most important food supply bases. Therefore, in order to meet the social needs and expectations, we approach research and education from a particular perspective. Thus we work to develop food production technology that harmonizes nature, explicate biological functions, secure food safety, preserve and restore natural ecosystems, and revitalize farming communities. We also conduct research using bio-technology and other state-of-the-art technologies.

In the previous fiscal year, we intend on meeting the targets stipulated above by ensuring that our educational goals are firmer and more effective. For this purpose, the three former Departments have been reorganized as the following: the "Department of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources", the "Department of Food Science and Biotechnology", and the "Department of Environmental Sciences and Technology". Furthermore, the "Special Course in International Food Resources Sciences" was added two years ago. With these four pillars as a basis, while steadily engaging the need for globalization, we will forthwith promote educational reform through collaboration between the undergraduate program and the graduate school (master's program).
